Museu de Arte Contemporanea (MAC), Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1994
For the exhibition “Art by Air Freight” of Finnish contemporary Art in the Museu de Arte Contemporanea (MAC) in Sao Paulo, Andersson used his installation-sculpture Marcel Duchamp dans la Douche. It is a surreal portrait of Duchamp (and Mona Lisa!) staring through his binoculars.
It had been installed in different contexts earlier and for Sao Paulo Andersson looked for a connection between Duchamp and Brazil. He found out that Duchamp had a Brazilian mistress, visual artist Maria Martins.
For the installation Andersson made the butt of Martins by gluing Do Ponto Coffee beans on a butt shaped drop. He built a favela house for the butt out of scrap wood found in the surrounding of the museum. The foundation of the house is made of tiles collected from the several tile shops found in Sao Paulo.
Duchamp is viewing Martins with his binoculars. In between is a note stand with a facsimile of Duchamp’s instructions for using his work Étant donnés. The facsimile has superimposed instructions by Andersson about how to use his work, Marcel Duchamp dans la Douche.
